Thanks for coming by my blog. Why do you find this article to be curious?
Hi EOR,
Good to see you here as well! I think it provides some sort of disjunctive contrast to read about the mindsets of terrorists renouncing the conflict while they prepare for their weddings, which to me symbolize their desire for normality.
It reads as surreal to me. Those involved in the on the ground violence of the conflict often harbour so much anger and hatred that their renouncing of terrorism for the purpose of achieving amnesty and meeting the requirements for marriage seems like changing the colour settings on a tv. Too simple. But maybe that's just it. Maybe at it's core since the simplicity of emotion drives the conflict, maybe that same simplicity is the key to ending it. Of course I'm seriously oversimplifying ;-)
Reading it is like watching one of those satirical short films where everyone is dancing and singing for laughs. Maybe this is a sign of my skepticism growing. But I can't help but blanch a little at such overt declarations that aren't really backed as of yet with change at the ground beyond these nighttime prisoners. What are they getting out of making a public announcement to a major israeli newspaper that the war is over when simultaneously hamas and hezbollah continue to encourage rioting in our towns and villages?
It's pretty much human nature to reach a point where the desire for normalcy bears down with greater strength because it's just easier when arms are laid down.
I guess it doesn't really matter whether the impetus is meeting the requirements of a future brides parents or just a desire to stop fighting, as long as terror is no longer chosen as a life option.
But, still, when I read it I feel like alice in wonderland admiring the rabbits and wondering if the mushrooms are magic.
